Getting to Know Your Students . . . Is That Allowed?

Alice Hetziltene, in the chapter “Boys’ and Girls’ Reading” alludes to the librarians getting to know the young readers, going so far as to even call them their “boy and girl friends”.
I agree that this is a great way to learn who your students/clients/whatever you want to call them are. It is a great way to find out what it is they like to read. Young patrons should have a confidence and trust with their librarian.
Here comes the controversy!!!
I work in a high school library.
Where I work, H.R. told us that this was state mandate that we watch a presentation about teacher/student harassment.
We were told that we should not get personal with students. We are the adult, the authority figure; we are not their “confidant”.
If you get to know your students too well, or if they get to know you too well this may lull them into a false sense of security and “you could be considered a PREDATOR!!!”
IS THIS INASNE? Who would even think about this stuff. It is a brilliant idea to allow children to be afraid of their school/public librarian. What are these people thinking!?!?
Predators Be Warned!!!
